    One of the most common blunders people make when preparing stuffing is opting for excessively fresh bread, but it’s vital to be thoughtful about the type you select. Not every choice will yield identical outcomes. “Begin with a high-quality bread that has texture, such as sourdough, French bread, or ciabatta, and ensure it’s adequately dried out to absorb all the flavorings,” advises Som. If your selected bread is a bit too fresh, you can place it in your oven at approximately 225 degrees Fahrenheit until it achieves the ideal consistency for soaking in all your flavors.

    Moreover, don’t simply grab the ancient dried herbs that have lingered in your pantry for years. Each component significantly impacts the flavor of your stuffing. “Aromatics and herbs are your allies here,” states Som. “Incorporate ample onion or shallot, then add various herbs. Thyme leaves, sage, and rosemary are excellent choices.”

    Innovate with mix-ins

    Once you possess a robust foundation of premium, adequately dried bread, an abundance of aromatics, and your selected broth or stock to maintain moisture, you are well on your way to exceptional stuffing. Nevertheless, the beauty of stuffing lies in its remarkable versatility, allowing you to significantly enhance the flavor with some carefully chosen mix-ins. A mere sprinkle of wilted celery simply won’t do. “Many flavor-rich add-ins make the stuffing captivating,” Peter Som elaborates.

    What should you merge in? “Consider sausage, bacon, or pancetta, alongside dried fruits or nuts for crunch, and diced apples or pears to impart a sweet touch,” suggests Som. To create a stuffing that is sure to please your guests, aim for a blend of varied flavors and textures. You can incorporate as much or as little of each mix-in as you prefer, but be mindful of the overall harmony. You don’t want to surpass the bread quantity with add-ins, or you’ll end up with a concoction that, while flavorful, doesn’t truly resemble stuffing.

    Regarding how much stuffing to prepare per guest, approximately ¾ cup per person serves as a helpful guideline. And don’t fret about preparing excess! There are numerous delightful ways to repurpose leftover stuffing, such as stuffing your favorite peppers or utilizing it to create soup dumplings, meaning you won’t mind having some remaining to transform into another delectable dish.
